FAQ

What calculator should I purchase?

This was the subject of my first post.  The short answer is, buy the TI-30XS Multiview.  Other calculators will work just fine, but the TI-30XS Multiview is the easiest to use and most user friendly.  It’s also less than $20.00 (US).

Use this reference card for definitions of the calculator’s statistics variables.

What reference material should I purchase for the CQE exam?

I created this data table to determine what material is referenced most on ASQ’s website.

Unless you enjoy reading technical journals, skip Juran’s Quality Handbook, instead go with Thomas Pyzdek’s Quality Engineering Handbook.  It is pricey, but easy to read, easy to understand, and nearly as comprehensive as the Juran book–a much better value.  Also Purchase The CQE Primer from the Quality Council of Indiana.

I’ve also heard good things about Quality America Inc.’s reference material, but I haven’t personally reviewed them.

What reference material should I purchase for the CQT exam?

I used the CQT Primer and Quality Technician’s Handbook – from the review, it looks like the 4th Ed. is better.  I have used the 5th ed. teaching at the local college and can confirm that there are rough spots.  But, overall I have few complaints.   I have not read any other CQT material.  There is some overlap with the CQE BOK.  So, if you are looking for help with specific topics, you may want to look to CQE ref. books.

How should I study for the exam?

Use the Primer as your primary study material.  There will be several sections of the Primer that you understand perfectly.  Don’t spend too much time on them.  Focus instead on the sections that are still unclear after studying the Primer.  You will need to supplement the Primer with other sources like Google or one of the many reference books on the subject–like Pyzdek’s book mentioned above.  Don’t underestimate ASQ’s website; there is a lot of information there.  Take as many practice exams as possible, including the ones on the ASQ site.
